Album Review: Calvin Locklear – Watch Them Dance

by on Jul.23, 2009, under Album Reviews

I am glad Calvin Locklear sent me his EP when he did. The combination of the beautiful summertime weather and his easygoing music are beginning to make this a good day. Locklear, as a brief introduction (and according to his MySpace page), rambled through the Midwest by ways of Nashville and Kansas City before finally ending up in Denver. His style can best be described as a soulful, often jubilant combination of pop and folk.

The opener for the Watch Them Dance EP, “You’re Fired” features a driving beat (with generous amounts of hand-claps), and a sort of gospel-choir backup. Catchy guitar riffs wind themselves throughout the 5 track release, and play well on the intros of “Carbonation” and “River Jordan.”

As far as lyrical content is concerned, Locklear often sings about self-realization in a way that tells a story. “River Jordan” is a classic story of redemption and a tested faith, while “Talking Backwards” tells about a search for forgiveness.

Overall, Locklear has an incredibly accessible sound and straightforward style. If you’re looking for something to play at your next BBQ or picnic, consider Watch Them Dance. This release is available on iTunes, also be sure to check out Calvin Locklear’s MySpace.
