Surf music in a landlocked state: Moon Tides

There’s a new lo-fi surf group in Colorado: Moon Tides. The newest members of the Act So Big Forest collective have 2 songs out: “To Be” and “Swimming.” Both are full of bright, reverb-drenched, summery guitars and breathy vocals. Moon Tides will be playing the upcoming FoCoMX music festival at the Alleycat Cafe in Fort Collins at 8pm on Saturday, April 9th. Keep an eye out for these guys, as I’m sure they have more up their sleeves.

Something Like Sound Presents: Colorado Sounds Volume 2

In late 2009 Something Like Sound released Colorado Sounds, a compilation of music from the Centennial State. Two years later Colorado Sounds Volume 2 is making its debut with an expanded roster and greater diversity of sound. The new release comes just weeks before Denver bands and fans swarm Austin, TX for the annual SXSW conference (where download cards for this free compilation will be liberally distributed). Curator Tim Weilert designed this project with one goal in mind: expose people everywhere to the quality and uniqueness of modern music in Colorado.

Mike Marchant gives away 3 EPs

Mike Marchant, the man behind Widowers and The Outer Space Party Unit (in addition to playing guitar for Houses), is currently giving away his first three EPs as a “thank you” to fans. For the next few days Marchant’s solo work will be available for free through his bandcamp page (Marchant suggests putting a zero in the name-your-price box, also don’t worry about any threats of an obnoxious email list, he’s not a fan of such devices). News of this giveaway comes on the heels of Marchant’s announcement that he’s starting a new band:

I’m about to begin work on a full-length with a new band. I put an absurd amount of time into writing the songs, and am very excited to share them with you. Details (band name, members, etc) will come soon. Happy new year, and thanks again for listening.

While the overall tone of Marchant’s work is relatively cohesive, each EP explores different aspects of pop, folk, lo-fi, space, and electronic styles. In addition to the three EPs, a $1 release for the single “You Were A Runner” is also available through Marchant’s bandcamp. To give you a taste of this release, we’ve embedded it below.

Houses premieres new track

It’s two days before Christmas and a gift has already arrived. Several months have passed since we last heard anything from the Houses camp, but today’s release of “Your Ghost” breaks that silence. The track, which will likely make an appearance on the group’s Winter EP, has a haunting piano matched with Andy Hamilton’s cool vocals. You may believe otherwise, but Houses has been hard at work on the Winter EP (the last of the four seasonally themed EPs) for nearly a year now. Somewhere between twenty and thirty songs have been tried, recorded, and shelved, but it’s finally beginning to take shape, ready for release in early 2011.

To assure you that we have in fact been hard at work, we release to you for free this nearly-finished version of “Your Ghost,” which is slated to make an appearance on the EP. Feel free to download, share, “like,” and otherwise enjoy and pass along this track.

I once told Eric Peterson he was the “most on-top-of-it person I know.” Juggling a school workload, practicing and playing in at least 4 different bands, web design, and occasional video-work, Peterson was understandably busy. Last week, when I received an email from Eric, I wasn’t entirely surprised to hear that he’s scaling back on his musical projects to focus on other endeavors.

While my personal hope is that Peterson’s musical hiatus will not be permanent, there is still one final chance to see the multi-instrumentalist songwriter perform his craft live. On Saturday, December 18th Peterson’s Roger, Roll will make its final appearance at the Hi-Dive. Furthermore, another blog-favorite- Hello Kavita- will be playing their last show that evening. Given the “farewell” nature of this show, it’s certainly not one to miss.

As a bittersweet bonus, the entire Roger, Roll catalog has been made available as a free download in addition to a handful of demos and other such recordings. Give a listen to 2008′s The Blackwell Gate (embedded below) and click through the links for other Roger, Roll recordings.

ASBF – Red Basilisk: a soundtrack for snowy days

Last night snow began gently falling. This morning the world outside was covered in a glorious white sheet of powder. With the holiday season in full swing, the last few weeks have been filled with the schlocky songs of Christmastime with many looking for better listening alternatives. Along with the snow this morning, another delightful winter tradition took place: Act So Big Forest’s annual Christmas Forest compilation (Volume 4: Red Basilisk). A basilisk, for those unfamiliar, is a variety of mythical serpent.

The compilation brings together the recently re-branded/expanded Act So Big Forest collective in a more wintery context than their previous compilation Triton. Recently Pitchfork-premiered Candy Claws track “Snow Bridge” sits nestled in among a handful of delightfully gazey non-traditional winter songs. Among the more-familiar tunes are Fellow Citizens’ take on “Christmas Time is Here,” Galaxies’ percussion-based version of “Blue Christmas,” a jazzy “Three Kings” from Hosannas, and Paean’s “O Holy Night.”

M. Pyres & The Season Creeps: Mountain Pacific

After hinting at its release earlier this summer, M. Pyres has finally released Mountain Pacific, an EP awash in hazy vocals and even hazier guitars. With this newest release, Matt Sage (accompanied by summer-time band The Season Creeps) take one step closer to finding a cohesive sound while still remaining fairly loose and garage-rock-inspired. Madison-based multi-instrumentalist Julian Lynch makes an appearance on “Japanese Milk Truck” with his signature horn-styling while an earthy, almost-tribal backing track supports.

My personal favorite track from this release is “Concord,” a tune we posted up here back in June right before M. Pyres went on tour with Woodsman. Mountain Pacific comes out on the heels of the announcement that the M. Pyres Apart The Echo cassette has officially sold out. Both releases are now available as free downloads via Patient Sounds. Tennis, Paper Bird do Daytrotter

I have a confession: I still haven’t seen Tennis, the group that everyone and their mom is talking about. They’ve garnered a lot of attention on national blogs, in local newspapers, and even went on the road for a brief stint this summer. The sail-rock group (consisting of husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley) released a pair of 7″s full of shimmery, sea-voyage-inspired tunes which quickly sold out. While everyone will have to wait until tomorrow to see them open for STRFKR at Hi-Dive, their Daytrotter session went up today.

Joyful noisemakers Paper Bird also stopped by the Rock Island, IL Daytrotter studios earlier this summer. Their session went up a couple weeks back and features a delightful sampling of songs from their recently released full-length When The River Took Flight. They’ll be playing a handful of local dates over the next few weeks in addition to a Texas tour in late October.

The Best Things 2: Electric Boogaloo

It has been waaaaaaay too long since I did a “The Best Things Are Free” post. There’s been a multitude of incredible home-grown music released for free in the past few months; here are a handful to keep you occupied.

A bunch of releases from Patient Sounds: Matt Sage & Co. have been keeping busy in Fort Collins releasing tapes, going on tour, and being featured on NPR. Patient Sounds tends to put out at least one new lo-fi release per month these days. Highlighted above: Littoral Drift (Brett Taylor), Lush Cola (Tim Perry), and the Patient Sounds summer sampler (featuring M. Pyres, Ambassador Engine, The Good Old Fashioned Sinners, and more). Also check out Black Tape & Cast Off/Cold Months, collections of M. Pyres b-sides and music for the coming winter.

Pretty Lights – Spilling Over Every Side EP: The second chapter in a trilogy of EPs, Spilling Over Every Side reminds us all why Pretty Lights has become so popular in the last few months. Not only has Derek Vincent Smith sold out Red Rocks, but he did it without charging for his music.

The Pseudo Dates – 400 Some Odd Songs in 400 Some Odd Nights: Possibly one of the best records to come out of the Hot Congress camp, the debut full-length from the now-defunct Pseudo Dates combined psychedelic pop and rock. The result was a handful of catchy tunes: “Indeed We Love You,” “Amber, Show Me Your Scars,” and “Amateur Night At The Shooting Range” all well worth the listen.

Arliss Nancy – Truckstop Roses: The second release from Fort Collins alt-country band Arliss Nancy shows the group’s progression since their debut Dance To Forget. The guitar parts are tighter and the lyrics more heart-wrenching. Also, I’m fairly certain that Jon Snograss (Drag The River) makes a cameo.

Weed Diamond & Supergoose – a Beko digital split

It’s not every day that you see a group from Denver release a split with a Hungarian band… on a French label. Well, today is one of those days: Weed Diamond and Supergoose (a self-proclaimed “New Wave Death Pop” group from Badacsony, Hungary) find themselves matched on his week’s release from Beko. This is not the first time the French digital-only label has released material from a Denver group; Woodsman appeared on Beko 34 which was released back in March.

The two tracks from Weed Diamond are far softer and more ethereal than Supergoose’s contribution; although all four songs are worth the free download. “M. Pyres Got It Goin’ On #2″ sounds as though it could be on a Patient Sounds release with its emphasis on reverb-drenched vocals and lo-fi guitar tone. “Tragic Hair Improv #4″ is a free form dream-pop number with multiple layers and airy vocals floating through the track.
